European Indulgence - The Italian Lakes, Swiss Alps & Stelvio

This tour is for the romantic at heart. Delight your senses with the charisma of the Italian lakes, the sweeping Dolomites and Swiss Alps, mouth-watering cuisine, superb wine and delightful locals – all while staying in world class hotels and driving some of the most picturesque and satisfying roads in the world.

The itinerary

  • Day Day 1: Milan

Accommodation: Principe di Savoia Hotel, Milan, Italy

Arrive in Milan, Italy’s most  sophisticated city. Spend the day exploring the architectural elegance and gastronomic delights of this European style icon.

  • Day Day 2: Milan to Limone sul Garda via Salo

Accommodation: Eala, Limone sul Garda, Italy

One of our team members will deliver your chosen vehicle at the Principe di Savoia hotel. After a familiarisation and safety walkthrough, it’s over to you.

Drive out of the city on the autostrada to the hidden gem of Lago d’Iseo, breaking in the pretty village of Lovere. Continuing on, the road hugging the western shore of the lake, Sebina Occidentale, is something of a local legend; breathtakingly scenic, and even a touch challenging in spots.

Today’s lunch will be at one of the wineries in the Franciacorta sparkling wine region bordering the south-eastern shores of  Lake Iseo.

From Iseo the route makes its way across the Lombardy countryside to the town of Salo on the edge of Lake Garda, from where you’ll spend the afternoon navigating the western shoreline of the largest of Italy’s lakes. As you make your way north on the Gardesana Occidentale, the scenery becomes more dramatic, with the surrounding mountains rising high above the lake.

The last stop of the day is the terraced town of Limone sul Garda. Wander the town’s photogenic promenade and narrow, hillside laneways while pondering which gelato stall to indulge in.

Less than 10 minutes from Limone, your hotel for the night, perched on a cliffside overlooking the northern end of the lake, is the exquisite 5-star Eala.

  • Day Day 3: Limone sul Garda to Merano via The Dolomites

    Accommodation: Villa Eden, Merano, Italy

Today is about driving the jagged peaks of The Dolomites. First up is a sinewy treat that leads you to the German speaking region of Trentino.

After a quick break, the route guides you into the heart of the Dolomites and what we believe is some of the finest alpine scenery in Europe. Driving along this motoring mecca is an experience to be savoured, with roads that carve their way through forests and across mountain passes. Highlights include Pordoi and Gardena passes, to name two.

Spend your evening relaxing in the elegant Villa Eden in the leafy thermal spa town of Merano.

  • Day Day 4: Merano to St Moritz via Stelvio and Bernina Passes

Accommodation: Suvretta House, St Moritz, Switzerland

Day 4 begins with a drive through the countryside of Italian South Tyrol on your way to the town of Gomagoi, at the base of the Stelvio Pass. Wind your up the famous switchbacks before stopping at the pass itself to admire the panoramic view back down the valley and the iconic ribbon of tarmac you just conquered.

Once you’ve made your way down the sweeping turns of the Swiss side of Stelvio, take a break in the spa town of Bormio before crossing into Switzerland via the less challenging but wonderfully scenic Bernina Pass.

The final stage of the day’s journey is driving into the glamourous Swiss alpine resort of St Moritz. Admire the towering Alps rising from pristine St Moritzersee lake as you pull up to the stately Suvretta House

  • Day Day 5: St Moritz to Tremezzo, Lake Como via Maloja Pass

Accommodation: Grand Hotel Tremezzo, Lake Como, Italy

After a lavish Suvretta buffet breakfast, buckle in for another superb stretch of alpine motoring. Gaze across the snow-capped peaks as you cruise alongside turquoise Swiss lakes before leisurely making your way back into Italy towards the striking Lake Como.

After the optional morning tour across the legendary Fluela Pass and the flowing, smooth tarmac of Julier Pass, a relatively short, picturesque drive leads you to the Italian border and on to the incomparable Grand Hotel Tremezzo on Lake Como. Once you’ve checked in, wander across the road to the jetty and take the slow ferry across the water to the traditional hamlet of Varenna, with its villa gardens and relaxed lakeside charm.

From Varenna, hop back on the ferry for a quick trip to The Pearl of Lake Como, Bellagio. Perched on the tip of a promontory jutting into the lake, this cobblestoned slice of Italian charm is the perfect place to lose yourself in narrow laneways and gaze out across the lake and surrounding peaks. Indulge in a long, late lunch in one of the many lakeside restaurants before taking the ferry back to Tremezzo.

  • Day Day 6: Tremezzo to Milan via Como

Accommodation: Principe di Savoia Hotel, Milan, Italy

This morning is an opportunity to relax a little and enjoy the views and facilities on offer in one of Europe’s great hotels. In the afternoon, you’ll meander down the western side of the lake before taking a break to explore the piazzas and cafes of Como’s old town.

Finish off the day’s touring with the short drive back to Milan and the Château Monfort Hotel. In the evening one of our team will meet you to pick up your car.

  • Day Day 7: Milan

Check out of the Principe di Savoia and take the opportunity to wander through the galleries, cafes and streets of this elegant city.
