After a final drive along one Germany’s most scenic roads, the Rossfeld Panoramastrasse, you’ll arrive at Salzburg’s premier hotel, the Sacher.
Today is yours to enjoy the Sacher and nearby cobblestoned streets of the enchanting old town. Wander the famed Getreidegasse under the watchful gaze of the near 1000-year-old Hohensalzburg Fortress towering over the town. You can take in the Mozart museum, the Mirabell Gardens, and famed cathedrals and palaces, or you can just wander the myriad alleyways and piazzas of this cultural icon.
Todays drive takes in some of the region’s most scenic alpine lakes, along with the village of Hallstatt. Here you can explore the old town square and wander the lakeside before riding the cable car to the Hallstatt Skywalk to admire the UNESCO World Heritage listed view.
From the Salzkammergut lake district, you’ll drive some typically quiet Austrian backroads to the heart of the Dachstein Alps and your overnight stop at the Hotel Schwaigerhof, alongside the pretty village of Schladming.
Leaving The Schwaigerhof, we suggest you take a couple of hours to ride the Dachstein cable car up to it’s namesake glacier and famed panoramic skywalk. From the cable car base, the route takes you south through the peaks and forests of the Radstädter Tauern mountain range and on to the Obertauern waterfall. A little further down the road, you’ll break for lunch at the restored Mautendorf castle overlooking it’s namesake village.
Leaving Mautendorf the route continues south to the town of Innerkrems and the start of Nockalm Strasse, the most scenic road in central Austria. This 35km stretch of panoramic tarmac twists and sweeps its way across the landscape of the Nockberge National Park, with stunning forest and alpine views along the way.
Your driving day ends when you pull into the luxurious 5–star Schloss Seefels Hotel, overlooking the distant Slovenian Alps from the shores of Lake Worth.
Your free day on Worthersee begins looking out over the lake and the distant peaks of nearby Slovenia. The rest of the day is yours to take in the facilities of your restored castle hotel, or wander the neighbouring charismatic lakeside shops, bars and restaurants. For the more actively inclined, you can take a cruise on the lake and explore some of the attractions such as the Pyramidenkogel Tower dotted along the shoreline, or grab a couple of the hotel bikes for a leisurely cycle along the promenade. If a slowdown day doesn’t appeal, you can opt to do our optional drive exploring some of the more scenic and sometimes challenging roads nearby.
Today begins on the shores of Lake Worth, from which you make your way cross–country to the delightful village of Heiligenblut. Soak up the view across the valley while sipping a coffee before taking the short drive to the famous Grossglockner High Alpine Road. This exceptional, purpose-built road is flawlessly maintained and passes numerous cafés, restaurants and lookout sidings, giving you ample opportunity to gaze out at the highest peaks in Austria.
After experiencing Grossglockner, you’ll have undoubtedly worked up an appetite. There’s no better place to relax than the upscale ski resort town of Kitzbuhel. Check into the Kithof Mountain Design Resort – the quintessential Tyrolean spa hotel – and the night is yours, along with Kitzbuhel’s dazzling array of dining, dessert and bar options.
After the glitz and glamour of Kitzbühel, enjoy a change of pace by winding your way through the picturesque alpine villages of Kirchdorf and Erpfendorf. Nestled in a quiet corner of Austria between the snow-capped peaks of the Kitzbühel and Kelchsau Alps, this road leads you to the idyllic alpine lake of Walchsee.
From here it’s a short drive to the medieval town of Kufstein, where you can take the time to explore the town’s historic centre, imposing fortress and the Römerhofgasse: a unique, reconstructed medieval laneway.
After breaking for lunch in Kufstein, the tour continues across the border into Bavarian Germany. Drive through the alpine village of Oberaudorf before the road intersects with the Autobahn, and enjoy one last chance to stretch the legs of your steed on the run back to the Vier Jahreszeiten Kempinski, in the heart of Munich.
